Doberman Name Trends

It’s pretty clear that the Doberman’s reputation for strength and fearlessness has influenced the names that are chosen for them. In our list of top names, you’ll find Roxy, Diesel, and Harley, along with mythology-inspired names like Thor and Titan, Zeus and Apollo. These god and goddess names are much more popular for Dobermans relative to other breeds. Indeed, Zeus is number one for male Dobermans! Norse god name Loki makes the top ten for this breed, while Athena ranks even higher on the girls’ side.

We also see a big influx of royalty-inspired names like Prince, King and Duke—which makes sense, given the Doberman’s dignified bearing.

Other popular Doberman names reference their dark coloring, such as Raven and Onyx, which don’t appear in the top 100 for all breeds.

Doberman Name Advice

If you’re having trouble deciding, keep in mind that great Doberman names can come from many different sources of inspiration, such as your favorite foods, books, celebrities, your heritage, or even dog breed history. For example, your puppy might sport a food-inspired name like Pepper or a musical moniker like Mozart.

Another consideration when choosing your Doberman name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Trey,” which could easily be misheard as “stay.”

Of course, what matters most is that the dog name you choose rolls off your tongue. The best Doberman names will make you happy. We’re fans of the “backdoor test” for dog name selection. It’s pretty much what it sounds like: stand at the back door and call out your new dog‘s potential name. Saying “Cash, it’s time for dinner!” or “Angel, leave it!” helps take the name out of your imagination and into reality.
